The Power of the Silk Pillowcase: Real or Fake?
A beauty sleep-obsessed editor weighs in.
We all know the fairy tale myth of the silk pillowcase. It’s beauty sleep’s secret weapon, keeping our precious blowouts intact and our skin ultra-soft. As an editor forever on a quest to get the most (beauty) bang for my lack-of-REM-sleep buck, I decided it was time to trade in my old cotton pillowcase for something a bit more luxe.
But before choosing a silk pillowcase, I made sure to do my research because, unbeknownst to me until this very experiment, not all silks are created equal. For one, it’s essential that the pillowcase be 100% silk, because apparently manmade is a no-go. Another thing to look for is a long strand mulberry silk with a traditional charmeuse weave (yeah, you’ll need to write that down) as it’s the smoothest, and to be perfectly honest, fanciest. It’s expensive, so you may want to look to other options in the $30-$50 range.
Like many women (c’mon ladies, fess up), I’m on the Kim Kardashian 5-Day hair plan, which means I want my styling—curling iron beach waves or a bouncy blowout—to last as many days as possible. After a week of test-driving, the silk provided a welcome change to my texture. There were far less kinks and flyaways in my hair, which is amazing as I have thick, curly hair that frizzes for any reason (or no reason) at all. And perhaps it’s all in my head, but I felt like the silk’s cooling effect made it so that I didn’t sweat on those nights where the heat was cranked way too high. All in all, if good hair’s your thing, it’s a real game-changer.
Confession: I was totally that girl on the train with visible creases in her face from last night’s shut eye. That’s because try as I may to sleep properly—i.e. on my back so my face isn’t touching the pillow—I inevitably end up just pressing down on my face, contorting it every which way. That’s where a silk pillowcase was most fruitful, as I didn’t have a single crease in my entire face. Being the anti-aging nut that I am, I am very aware of the fact that sleep creases are like ironing wrinkles into the skin, so I’m super excited about this new development.
Another great thing: it not only made my face feel less puffy, but it also helped reduce my skin’s redness. I’m constantly battling rosacea, so the lack of abrasion was a godsend, especially during these colder months. Lastly, after the first few days, my skin was noticeably softer, like I-shouldn’t-touch-my-face-but-I-can’t-help-it soft. Final verdict? A silk pillowcase is an absolute must for any woman, nay PERSON, on the planet. (Too much?)
